Abdominal pain in hypertriglyceridemia
نویسنده
چکیده
Hypertriglyceridemia increases the risk of acute pancreatitis, accounting for a minor but clinically relevant proportion of cases. We present a case of diabetic ketoacidosis, complicated by severe hypertryglyceridemia and pancreatitis. The pancreatitis was managed and controlled by managing the hypertryglyceridemia. We aim to review the specific management targeted for this subset of the population.

Use of Plasmapheresis in Managing the Diagnostic Dilemma of Symptomatic Hypertriglyceridemia
We present a case study of a 29-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain typical for pancreatitis. Detailed history and investigations revealed that the cause of abdominal pain was secondary to the raised triglyceride levels. It was difficult to distinguish whether he had hypertriglyceridemia-induced abdominal pain or acute pancreatitis, given that he had only a mildly raised lipase and ...
متن کاملLipoprotein lipase deficiency in an infant.
Patients with isolated hypertriglyceridemia usually present with recurrent abdominal pain, pancreatitis, eruptive xanthomas, lipemia retinalis and hepatosplenomegaly. We describe the diagnosis and treatment of an infant with severe hypertriglyceridemia. The child was found to be heterozygous for two novel mutations in the lipoprotein lipase gene.
متن کاملSevere Hypertriglyceridemia Possibly Masked Acute Pancreatitis and Led to a Difficult Diagnosis in an Obese Patient with Ketoacidosis-onset Type 2 Diabetes
A young obese man with ketoacidosis-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus, associated with severe hypertriglyceridemia, was admitted to a local hospital complaining of abdominal pain. Although the abdominal pain worsened, his serum amylase level remained normal with persistent severe hypertriglyceridemia until the second day of hospitalization. The next day, computed tomography showed severe acute pan...
متن کاملHypertrygliceridemia-induced Acute Pancreatitis Following Hyperlipidemic Abdominal Crisis.
Hypertriglyceridemia is a well established cause of acute pancreatitis (AP). Multiple mechanism are proposed to explain this phenomenon, but the exact mechanism is unknown. Clinical manifestations are similar to other forms of AP. Although amylase and lipase levels exclude the diagnosis of AP in normolipidemic patients, they may be normal in hypertriglyceridemia-induced AP. Further evaluation w...
متن کاملPegaspargase Induced Hypertriglyceridemia Resulting in Severe Fatal Pancreatitis.
Pegaspargase is used to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Pegaspargase definitely has its benefits in treating ALL; however we cannot lose sight of one of its very rare but potentially deadly complications, acute pancreatitis. Clinicians should monitor triglycerides while the patient is on treatment with Pegaspargase and suspect acute pancreatitis if the patient develops abdominal pain. I...
